mistakes

when learning a new language you will make mistakes... lots of them! here's some mistakes that my students made on their quiz when answering the questions "what do you say to the waiter to pay for the food?" or "what should you do or not do according to American dining manners?"

here's some of my favorite mistakes :)

"tibets please" (i think she meant to say "check please")
"use your folks silently" (use your forks silently?)
"be quilt" (be quiet or don't shout)
"don't put your dishes on the ground" (don't put your trash on the ground?)
my favorite: "use your own pork" (fork hehe)

i love that learning a new language can be humorous and it's humbling at the same time because i make mistakes in chinese.. ALL the time!! my grammar, tones, pronunciation... i'm pretty sure my mistakes are just as funny or even worse!

pig face

only in china... will your student give you a pig mask as a gift and tell you that they have a matching one!

my friend ruthy came by last night, during a game night with a few students, and she was super excited to share with us a new gift that one of her students just gave her... lo and behold it was a pig mask! a really creepy one! but according to chinese people- they don't think it's scary at all but cute and interesting, like "monkey king" (a famous chinese novel/tv show they watch). there's just some things that i can't adapt to... haha anyways we had a ton of good laughs (and nightmares) after that, enjoy the pig face pictures!

numbers and more!

what can i say? i love stealing blogs from others.. this one comes from a fellow teacher in china's blog- in case you ever wanted to know how to count with fingers in chinese and know some pretty cool/interesting/amazing facts about china!

Chinese have mastered the art of counting to 10 on one hand! This recent blog post from the Beijinger has a ton of fascinating facts about China as it really is today. Just a few to whet your appetite:

1) China produces 2.29 TRILLION cigarettes per year. This is enough to circle the globe 60,000 times if you lined them up end-to-end.
2) China is the world’s largest pork producer with 1 pig for every 3 people. In fact, China produces more pigs than the next 43 largest pork producing countries COMBINED.
3) In China, 34 children are born every minute compared to 7.9 in the United States.
4) There’s a higher percentage of women in China’s parliament (21.3%) than in the US Congress (16.8%). Is your mind blown yet?

Read the rest…there are more! I seriously feel amazed that I get to live in this confusing, incredible, massive, crowded, beautiful country at such a crucial time in its development.
